What Do Unmarried "Spouses" Call Each Other?

Came across this interesting question earlier today: what do two people – who aren’t married, but act like they’re married – call each other? According to this New York Times article on the subject, there are seven million people in the United States living with a paramour who isn’t their spouse. That’s a lot of people who try and come up creative ways to label their “partner,” which the article states is a “too anodyne, empty, cold” way to name their live-in non-spouse.
